An Audio Engineer is a person skilled with the manipulation, mixing and reproduction of sounds. Many audio engineers use technologies to creativly produce sound for film, radio, television broadcasts, music, electronic products and videogames. Alternatively, the term "Audio Engineer" can refer to a scientist or engineer who develops new audio technologies while working within the field of acoustical engineering.

The job of a recording engineer is not only to record audio, but to edit and mix it in such a way as to make the audio sound the best it possibly can. During a recording session, he must listen to audio from both a musical and a technical perspective, looking for ways to adjust the equipment, recording levels and even the performance of the artist in such a way that the recorded product sounds perfect.

Audio engineering involves the creative and practical aspects of sounds including but not limietd to; speech and music, as well as the development of new audio technologies and advancing scientific understanding of audible sound.
